Department of Law, University of Calcutta
The Department of Law, University of Calcutta, Kolkata (formerly the University College of Law and colloquially known as Hazra Law College), founded in 1909, is a faculty offering undergraduate, postgraduate, doctorate and post-doctorate courses, and also oversees fifteen affiliated law schools. The college was established under the leadership of then Vice-Chancellor Sir Ashutosh Mukherjee, who envisioned it as a model centre of legal education; following a Senate meeting on 4 July 1908—attended by figures such as Sir Surendranath Banerjee and Babu Mahendranath Roy, and presided over by Rector Andrew Henderson Leith Fraser—a resolution was passed to establish the University Law College for promoting legal education and serving as a model institution. The college began functioning in July 1909 under a government body of 16 members with the Vice-Chancellor as President; Sir Ashutosh Mukherjee became the first Dean of the Faculty of Law, succeeded in 1924 by eminent lawyer Babu Mahendranath Roy after his death, while Dr. S.C. Bagchi, LL.D served as the first Principal and Birajmohan Majumdar as the first Vice-Principal. The Faculty has existed in its present form since 1983.
